For those of you looking to upholster some chairs, ottomans, or benches, we often get asked how many cowhides are needed. 

This will certainly depend on how many chairs you'll be doing and the overall size of each item. But we think it would be helpful to know how to measure a cowhide to get a good estimate on how many and what size you'll need. 

Here is a rough guide for the usable area that upholsterers can use from each cowhide for your project:

From this point, you can decide if you want to go with a large size or X-large size cowhide and how many of them you will need. I'm sure your upholsterer will also tell you that they need more material to work with in order to wrap around edges as well.
